Irish President visits Davitt's Land League Club
Mary McAleese endorses the legend of Michael Davitt during the centenary celebrations to commemorate his death at the Haslingden IDL Club (Michael Davitt Branch) "The Land League".

A proud and auspicious occasion for the Haslingden Irish Democratic League Club when Mary McAleese, the President of Ireland visited the club in April 2006. Mrs McAleese gave a magnificent speech about the life and times of Michael Davitt, the hardship he and his family and others must have suffered during their flight from Ireland in the 19th Century. She went on to state how the people of Haslingden had welcomed such exiles and how Haslingden itself was the crucible of Davitt’s political career.After her speech she mingled with the crowd who had turned up from every Irish club in the North of England and shook hands and spoke with almost everyone there.The consensus of everyone there on the day was that Mary McAleese is a charming woman, in a genuine sense, who emanates a creed of peace and goodwill to all. "It will be a day to remember for the rest of our lives".A specially commissioned DVD, (The Road to Haslingden), of this event(including the President's speech on Davitt's influence and other events of the celebrations) is available for sale.
